PTE ACADEMIC 2025: IMPORTANT CHANGES FROM AUGUST 7, 2025

Pearson officially launches the Enhanced PTE Academic on August 7, 2025 — an upgraded version featuring major changes in test structure, question types, and scoring methods. This is a significant step toward improving the accuracy of English proficiency assessment for both academic and skilled migration purposes.

Core elements remain the same:

• PTE continues to be a trusted international English test, used by millions of test-takers, universities, and governments.
• The test remains fully computer-based, lasting around 2 hours and divided into three main parts: Speaking & Writing, Reading, and Listening.
• Existing preparation materials are still useful, with new resources being added.

Key updates:

• The number of questions increases from 52 to about 65, covering 22 question types.
• Two new question types are introduced in the Speaking section:
  1. Respond to a Situation – provide a spoken response to a hypothetical scenario, assessing real-life interaction skills.
  2. Summarise Group Discussion – listen to a group discussion and summarize it, testing summarization and coherent expression skills.
• Some integrated tasks are now split to assess individual skills more precisely, leading to clearer scoring.

Scoring & reliability:

• A hybrid scoring system combining AI + human examiners will be used for extended speaking and writing tasks.
  • AI evaluates grammar, pronunciation, and fluency,
  • Human examiners assess content quality.
• An automated monitoring system will detect memorized responses and flag them for expert review.

Global recognition:

PTE 2025 remains accepted by the Australian Government for all visa types, 100% of Australian universities, and over 3,500 global institutions across Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the UK, and beyond.
