On August 26, 2025, Phuong Nam Institute of Social Resource Development (Phuong Nam Institute), in collaboration with Binh Dinh General Hospital, held the opening ceremony for the training course titled “Mastering Evidence-Based Medicine: Critical Appraisal and Application”, led by Professor Nguyen Van Tuan - Professor ranked among the world’s top 0.5% of scientists, Distinguished Professor at University of Technology Sydney.

The ceremonyy was honored by the presence of distinguished guests, including:

  1. Mr. Do Van Tu - Director of Binh Dinh General Hospital Joint Stock Company;
  2. Ms. Nguyen Thi Xuan Vy - Director of Phuong Nam Institute;
  3. Professor Nguyen Van Tuan - Director of the Centre for Health Technologies, University of Technology Sydney (Australia);
  4. Dr. Tran Son Thach - University of Technology Sydney (Australia).

In the opening speech for the training course, Mr. Do Van Tu - Director of Binh Dinh General Hospital Joint Stock Company expressed, "This is an opportunity for participants and distinguished guests to unite and connect, forming a supportive community in scientific research and critical appraisal of medical evidence. From this, we can produce more research projects to further strengthen medical development in Vietnam and publish medical works with international recognition."

At the opening ceremony, Ms. Nguyen Thi Xuan Vy - Director of Phuong Nam Institute - gave a speech, "In order to contribute to the implementation of Resolution No. 57-NQ/TW issued by the Politburo on breakthrough development in science, technology, innovation, and national digital transformation; with the desire to help improve the quality of human resources in the field of science in general and medicine in particular - in line with international standards. With the approval of the People's Committee of Gia Lai Province under official letter No. 1687/UBND-KTTH, permitting Binh Dinh General Hospital to collaborate with Phuong Nam Institute of Social Resource Development to organize the training course titled "Mastering Evidence-Based Medicine: Critical Appraisal and Application.""

Prof. Nguyen Van Tuan - Director of the Centre for Health Technologies, University of Technology Sydney (Australia) - shared at the ceremony, "Evidence-based medicine is actually not something new. It has appeared in the medical literature and in the medical world since the early 1990s. By now, it has been over 30 years. It is not new to some of our colleagues, but perhaps it is new to us here. Because we have limited access to medical literature and limited training programs in this field within the country, some skills and information have not been fully accessible to our colleagues. That is why we designed this program."

Specialist Level II Doctor Le Van Bon - a former student who attended Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Tuan’s course 20 years ago and currently works at Binh Dinh Hospital, shared his thoughts, "We hope that this course, with the participation of leading professors, will provide us with more advanced knowledge in medical literature research, and that our future research outcomes will carry greater scientific value."

The opening ceremony of the training course on “Mastering Evidence-Based Medicine: Critical Appraisal and Application” marks an important milestone in the effort to enhance the quality of training for local healthcare professionals and to promote the spirit of evidence-based medicine from central to grassroots levels.

The training course “Mastering Evidence-Based Medicine: Critical Appraisal and Application” was led by Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Tuan, with co-teaching and support from Dr. Tran Son Thach. The course consists of 10 lectures: Introduction to Evidence-Based Medicine; Literature Searching; Clinical Research Designs; Appraising Research: Bias and Confounding; Interpreting Results: p-Values and 95% Confidence Intervals; Interpreting Results: Absolute Differences; Interpreting Results: Odds Ratios and Risk Ratios; Interpreting Diagnostic Study Results; Appraising Research: QALY (Quality-Adjusted Life Years); Sample Size Estimation.
